Market signals, June 2026
The European Commission has reached a preliminary view that Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure should be designated as gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act. If confirmed, both would face new obligations to improve interoperability, data portability and fair competition.
Earlier regulation in Europe focused on consumer platforms such as search and social media. This proposal moves deeper into other technology stacks, recognising that cloud infra heavily shapes how businesses build and scale AI.
Once organisations commit their data, applications and AI services to a cloud provider, changing platforms becomes costly and complex. Europe appears to be recognising that competition is no longer determined only by the products customers see, but also by the infrastructure companies depend in the background.
For marketers, this is a reminder that AI strategy is also an infrastructure strategy. Decisions about cloud platforms influence future flexibility, access to AI capabilities and data portability. Understanding platform dependency is now a part of long-term marketing and digital planning.
